The Giulia Evolution - Fee Fi Foglio, The Giant is Back

While the Giulia’s unveil hailed Alfa Romeo’s return to stylish saloon car production, machines from the marque bearing the Quadrifoglio logo signify the very best from the Italian company. The four leaf clover-badged Giulia was shown for the first time at the 2015 Frankfurt International Motor Show, intended to take on German rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG C63 and BMW M3.

In 2013 Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne requested a clean-sheet design for the next Alfa Romeo; a rear-wheel drive sports saloon to help return the company to its roots. He appointed former technical director at Ferrari and chassis engineer for the 458 Speciale, Philippe Krief as chief engineer for the Giulia and asked him to assemble a team of ten to design and build the car in two and a half years. This resulted in an all-new, longitudinal-engine, rear-wheel drive platform developed by Alfa Romeo.

As the new standard Giulia Quadrifoglio variant was launched to a rendition of "Nessun dorma" in 2015, so was the company's 105th anniversary which saw the company debut a restyled logo for all future Alfa Romeo models. The Giulia, presented under the new slogan La meccanica delle emozioni ("the mechanics of emotions") sported an all-aluminium alloy, twin-turbocharged petrol direct injection 90° 690T V6 engine, with a single-cylinder displacement of just under half a litre, for a total of 2,891 cc (176.4 cu in; 2.9 L). Impessively, this engine was developed for the Quadrifoglio by engineers with Ferrari background and is now well known to be derived from Ferrari's own twin-turbocharged F154 CB V8 engine, sharing the California T's bore and stroke.

4 years later at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Racing limited edition was introduced, celebrating the brands legendary racing history and the entry of a new Italian driver in Formula 1 competition Antonio Giovinazzi, joining the Alfa Romeo Racing team together with the 2007 F1 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen. This special edition caused a stir, wearing exclusive paintwork as a tribute to the Alfa Romeo Racing C38 Formula 1 car, as well as welcome details in the form of an Akrapovič titanium exhaust system and carbon fibre canards and lip spoiler. The most notable difference was the weight, having been reduced by 28 kilograms from the standard Quadrifoglio, matched with a technical tune-up by Alfa Romeo engineers that resulted in more torque and overall power, which amounts to a figure just over a spritely 512 horsepower, 7 horsepower over the standard model.

This was a car made in incredibly small numbers, with just 35 examples of the Sauber special edition produced for the worldwide market. Each of the 10 UK cars were fitted with an exclusive Alfa Romeo Racing badge to commemorate the 10 victories in Formula 1 from 1950 to 1951, a true celebration of Alfa Romeo's ever-deepening participation and involvement in the Formula 1 world championship, in partnership with Sauber. At the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed the vehicles made their UK debut, receiving an allocation of a mere 10 Giulia Quadrifoglio and three Stelvio Quadrifoglio limited editions, all believed to have been spoken for by the end of the Goodwood weekend.

Rare is the modern performance car with a personality that genuinely gets under your skin

- EVO Magazine

Chassis: L7630558

Purchased on the day of release by a father and son, the car has very rarely been driven, a total of 4 times in fact; however it has been fastidiously maintained and dry stored correctly as part of a larger collection and remains in the same single ownership to this day. This car is 1 of 10 unveiled to the UK market proudly wearing its Spa-Francorchamps plaque, commemorating Juan Manuel Fangio’s victory in 1950, in his Alfa Romeo 158. Every Sauber Racing Edition bore the name of a track where a famous historical race win for Alfa-Romeo took place and no single car shares the same name.

The odometer shows a mere 312 miles from new proving the current owners incredible restraint! All Sauber special edition cars left the factory finished in Trofeo Metallic White with beautifully contrasting Competizione Red, underlined by a sleek black line to complete the livery. The specification is impressive, complete with an exposed carbon-fibre roof, rear spoiler, front splitter, side steps, canards and door mirror covers. The cabin is trimmed in black leather and Alcantara, punctuated by red contrast stitching, red seatbelts and extensive carbon-fibre inlays. It rides on a set of unmistakably Alfa designed 19-inch dark grey alloy wheels fitted with Pirelli P Zero tyres; framing red brake calipers with carbon-ceramic brakes. Factory-fitted equipment is as you would come to expect for a modern flagship model, including front and rear parking sensors with reversing camera, privacy glass, multifunction steering wheel, voice control, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, carbon-backed Sparco sports seats, Harman Kardon sound system and a central infotainment system with satellite navigation and smartphone connectivity.

First registered in June 2020, this Giulia Sauber has been kept in temperature controlled storage under a car cover it’s entire life. The car is covered by the balance of the manufacturer’s five year warranty and three year free servicing package. The most recent routine maintenance was carried out on the 10th of July 2023 at 286 miles by main dealer Snows Alfa Romeo in Southampton. Prior to this, Snows Alfa Romeo carried out a service in August 2021 at 67 miles. The rear ceramic brake discs were replaced as part of a safety recall.

The white paintwork and red livery are in excellent condition, which is in line with the car’s very sparing use and low mileage. There are no reported blemishes and the front numberplate has never been fitted to avoid damaging the front bumper. Inside, the cabin is in equally impressive order, with no visible signs of wear. The original protective coverings are present from the factory, including seat and steering wheel cover; just as you would expect for a car that has never seen the rain!

Accompanying the car are the factory issued owners book pack, service book, car cover and warning triangle, along with our comprehensively prepared Keep binder depicting the history of this rare model and the modern photography for your perusal.

With its limited production, exceptional specification and never before offered ultra low mileage, this Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio ‘Alfa Romeo Racing Edition’ is sure to appeal to marque enthusiasts as a thrilling weekend steer, or an entertaining track-day toy. A brilliant addition to any collection.
