The McLaren Senna LM is a limited edition of the 825 hp McLaren Senna, developed by McLaren Special Operations. The bodywork features unique bodywork, including front fender louvers and unique exhaust outlets. McLaren's orange livery is a tribute to the McLaren F1 LM, which itself was created in honour of the F1 GTR that won Le Mans in 1995. The Senna LM also features polished ports and cylinder heads, OZ centre-lock wheels with a retro design, quad exhausts with satin gold tips, front fender louvers, the removal of the standard Senna's clear door panel, titanium body panels and LM branding. Power from the 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 is now up to 825 hp, matching the Senna GTR. Only 20 examples were produced, including 5 for the US market and 7 right-hand drive.

The focus in developing this car was to achieve faster lap times, to achieve this McLaren created a lightweight design that incorporated aerodynamic elements for the best airflow.

The car's many aerodynamic elements, such as the large adjustable double rear spoiler, which is electronically controlled in different settings, such as an airbrake or drag mode, the double diffuser and the F1-inspired roof scoop, provide the enormous downforce required to achieve extreme circuit times.

It’s all in the detail

While many may see this as just another Senna, all one needs to do is take a closer look and feast upon all the details meticulously copied over from the F1 LM’s. From obvious details like the paint code and wing to the minute details, such as the gold reflectors in the engine bay and the red and blue anodized center wheel locks, colour coded for left and right.

Inspired by success

It is difficult to overstate the significance of McLaren’s victory in the 1995 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, since the combined effort of drivers Yannick Dalmas, Masanori Sekiya, and JJ Lehto earned three particularly special bits of history. First, McLaren became only the third manufacturer to win on its Circuit de la Sarthe debut. Second, McLaren was the first constructor ever to complete the so-called motorsport ‘Triple Crown’ by adding to its wins in the Indianapolis 500 and Monaco Grand Prix. Third, nearly three decades later, the F1 GTR remains the last road-based car to triumph outright in the world’s greatest endurance race.

Given the scale of those accomplishments, McLaren duly commissioned a road-going version of the GTR racers that finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 13th in France. These were known as F1 LMs. Including the famous XP1 prototype that has remained under McLaren ownership ever since and is proudly on display at the firm’s Technology Centre headquarters, just six chassis were built. Each gained the competition car’s retuned engine, and no fewer than three were ordered new by the Sultan of Brunei.

The weight was reduced by approximately 76 kg to a total of 1,062 kg – achieved by having no interior noise suppression, no audio system, a stripped-down base interior, no fan-assisted ground effect and no dynamic rear wing. The car also had a different transaxle, various aerodynamic modifications, specially designed 18 in magnesium alloy wheels and an upgraded gearbox. The F1 LM used the same engine as the 1995 F1 GTR, but without race-mandated restrictors, to produce 671 hp. It had a top speed of 225 mph (362 km/h), which is less than the standard version because of added aerodynamic drag, despite identical gear ratios. In the place of the small dynamic rear wing there is a considerably larger, fixed CFRP rear wing mounted on the back of the vehicle.

The F1 LMs can be identified by their Papaya Orange paint. They were painted in this colour in memory of, and tribute to, Bruce McLaren, whose race colour was Papaya Orange. Two of the chassis were painted in Black with Grey trim similar to the Ueno Clinic sponsored Le Mans 24 Hours winning car. These cars were bought by the Sultan of Brunei and, as such, also feature horizontal stripes down the sides in yellow, red and blue.

Although only five F1 LMs were sold, a sixth chassis exists in the form of XP1 LM, the prototype for modifications to the existing F1 to form the new F1 LM. This car is also painted Papaya Orange and is retained by McLaren.
